accidental meta: BSG & manpain
I seriously just jotted down this recent roadtrip conversation on a sticky note in 2 minutes, so I figured I might as well post it here (the ongoing official LJ hiatus notwithstanding), along with a few other fannish tidbits I should share.
It came in the aftermath of watching the trailer for the new BSG spinoff Caprica[!], which is SO LOLARIOUSLY BAD that it boggles the mind. THE CYLONS WERE CREATED BY MAN: TO CURE THEIR MANPAIN! This is potentially good for me, time management wise, because if the trailer is any indication the show may actually be too unappealing for me to even sit through, much less get excited about -- despite the enticing presence of my faves Atia and Trixie portraying Wife #1 and Wife #2.
Anyway, my roadtrip buddy asked me to define "manpain":
Angst about how hard it is to be a straight white man. Straight white men have lots of big important responsibilities, like saving the world and protecting ladies and children. The great weight of these responsibilities hurts them in their deep and delicate souls.
This definition is moreover, I think, a good rationalization of why manpain annoys me on on male but not on female characters. When women (Kara Thrace or Sarah Cameron, for example) can be characterized as exhibiting manpain, it's because THEY have lots of big important responsibilities, like saving the world and protecting ladies and children, and that's actually kinda cool.
What's NOT cool is, in
pirateygoodness's words, "a show entirely about boys and the wives and/or daughters that occasionally show up to make them furrow their brows":
Also:
1. I've had almost no time to work on my LATE
hot_toaster ficathon story, which I originally intended to start in late June. This in itself is a perfect testament to all the ways that the current rhythm of my life supports making vids and multimedia crack but not real fic writing. I'm determined clear part of this week to finish a draft, though.
2. Despite being so undeserving, I received the stunning Hybrid POV Cyloncest fic lab'ring to discharge an active heat from
tellitslant!
3. I have an actual plane ticket to
vividcon (Thursday-Monday) -- though I still may not get into the con proper.
4. I have two vid reviews posts planned for
cyborganize in anticipation -- one all BSG -- but in the meantime let me point you to
heyiya's articulate and flattering notes about some projects she, I, and
beccatoria have finished recently.
5. In case you haven't heard, there's an epic wankstorm in progress -- suffice it to say that FanHistorydotcom is bad, and you should support the OTW's upcoming wiki instead.

OMG YAY
I'm sad that Caprica looks bad. I haven't seen the trailer yet, but I did have hopes.
Re: OMG YAY
btw, go here and boggle.
That trailer basically killed any enthusiasm I had for Caprica because it not only reinforced my fears that they would try to retcon the wonderful, if impressionistic backstory we got for the Cylon by somehow introducing skinjobs WAY too early and having their One God stuff be riffed from an existing human religion, but also cut away at my beliefs that they could make those, in my opinion dramatically dangerous, stories good. Because...it does not look that good.
It looks manpainy. And WOW do I love your definition.
I guess I worry that even if it's nothing we need to know to enjoy BSG, if it starts adding history and changing the history of BSG it has the potential to undercut the parts of BSG I find most intriguing (namely the evolution of the Cylon) and I'll have to devote time and attention to expunging it from my brain. >:(
But I'll stop having girlpain about it now.
I'm honestly at a bit of a loss as to what to do with myself now that our vidding mania has somewhat subsided. :( I suppose that makes it a good thing I'm moving to another continent to start a job I have no idea how to do in like...four days! But, like you, I do want to actually get back to writing fic (though unlike you that's sorta unsual for me).
I have very little idea what this wankstorm is about, but I did hear something about it in, of all places, a star wars chat room. Short version is, WOW fanhistorydotcom sound like assholes, and I didn't know there was going to be an OTW wiki, but that sounds awesome.
I might just canonuze bsg and look at this as somethibg else...
But for now, I will try to relax. Eg, every time Whedon does something new I worry he will finally make something not super, but Dr. Horrible did well and at ComicCon Dollhouse looked good...
Hugs for project debuts! Can't wait for your next vids!
YES, WHAT THE WHAT? does this not directly contradict the human experiments in the Razor flashbacks?
I have some sympathy for them wanting to retain the polytheists vs. monotheists conflict, because it's so rich -- I can imagine a GOOD way to do that (namely, continuing BSG's exploration of the common underlying basis of human and Cylon religions). but srsly, having humans make skinjobs and then teach them about g0d is NOT IT.
meanwhile TPTB are hassling Em about details of her awesome comic pitch -- I am washing my hands of it (at least until she has a new draft to show me), because there's a reason I don't do this for a living.
sounds like Polly Walker actually plays some religious leader and not a wife, though, so that's something?
*GIRLPAIN*
I'm sure you are no longer bored. :)
manpainsorrow to me that my mind control powers failed to convert you law enforcement lot to BSG. they're two different formations, I guess. those girls with guns certainly do know their manpain!I'm happy you did post this, and that you're showing us more projects. I love the manpain vocabulary. I'm still in for Caprica, but it will be less hard than BSG, I think.
Safe and happy travels!
:( <-- mansadface
ut oh.
maybe I have my own manpain? :)
it was great to see you btw, it always is.
it was lovely to see you too!
Also, I'm fairly certain manpain is one of the genre requirements of vampire and superhero shows. The female character always calls them on their bullshit, and is subsequently portrayed as irrational because she obviously doesn't understand the heightened danger. It's like they work in a defense should the audience dare question it. ...and now I'm questioning my watch-list again.
MEN ARE CLEARLY OPPRESSED. we women are obviously unable to comprehend their great burdens.
interest piqued, I am now reviewing every interaction we've had in an effort to determine how your awesomeness escaped me. I have a blanket policy of not talking to strangers, but supposedly there are filters. you sent me a very flattering message some months back, didn't you? I don't have it anymore, poo.
